My top five religion based horror movies!
I’m changing things up this week.
If you’ve been following me for a while then you know that I’m a big horror fan. I grew up watching the Universal monster and Hammer horror films, but recently this got me thinking about how I’ve never discussed religious themed horror movies. So… What better time than now.
One of the most familiar tropes in a horror films is religion. I think that has a lot to do with the basic idea of good vs evil. You have the devil who’s the antagonist against mankind and you have God which is the ultimate symbol of good. These two set up a great foundation for a horror film.
Without further a do — My top five religion based horror films.
#5 - Rosemary’s Baby
A young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.
Directed by Roman Polanski and starring Mia Farrow this one is a really creepy movie. It was the first time I’d gone from watching the Universal monsters and Hammer films to seeing a sophisticated film about horror. It wasn’t bloody, but it was scary in it’s own way.
#4 — The Serpent and the Rainbow
An anthropologist goes to Haiti after hearing rumors about a drug used by black magic practitioners to turn people into zombies.
Directed by horror legend Wes Craven this film doesn’t get enough credit. I love the idea of this film being in Haiti and the way that voodoo was showcased in a different type of way. It wasn’t normal zombies like Dawn of the Dead or those traditional types of films.
#3 — The Exorcist Three
A police lieutenant uncovers more than he bargained for as his investigation of a series of murders, which have all the hallmarks of the deceased Gemini serial killer, leads him to question the patients of a psychiatric ward.
George C. Scott stars in the third entry to the beloved franchise. Going into this movie I already loved the book Legion which it was based upon. To me it’s a perfect sequel because of its balance between mystery and horror while also delving into religious themes.
#2 — The Omen
Mysterious deaths surround an American ambassador. Could the child that he is raising actually be the Antichrist? The Devil's own son?
Creepy kids… Do I need to say anything more?
#1 — The Exorcist
When a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.
I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it a million more, this movie changed my life. I think it’s the perfect religious themed horror film. When I first saw this movie it sent me back to church for at least two or three weeks!
